Board Member Interviewed in St. Thomas

Jan Huang, a member of the Board of Directors, was interviewed by Mr. Sam Topp, host of Topp Talk, on Radio One, St. Thomas, during a recent visit to that island.  She was interviewed about her involvement with WIPA, its aims and its activities over these last several years.  The show, which is heard throughout the Virgin Islands, is one of the most popular call-in, talk radio shows.

Mrs. Huang spoke about WIPA’s five stated goals of:

Promoting education of women in their role to bring peace to the world

Equality between women and men

Arbitration, mediation and consultation as a means of settling international disputes

Communication in an international language   and

Elimination of all prejudice as the root cause of war.

This was especially timely as a foundation called the Family Resource Center in Charlotte Amalie, main city in St. Thomas, held their Peacemaker Award that same weekend.  Mrs. Huang visited their center and exchanged ideas concerning women’s rights and empowerment.

On Topp Talk, she spoke about the extensive work being done in concert with the All China Women’s Federation in China, particularly in the education of girl children through the Spring Buds Project, the role that the WIPA chapter played in Sierra Leone a few years ago in giving the main address at the signing of a peace agreement, the upcoming 20th anniversary in 2005 of the founding of WIPA, and the recognition recently given to WIPA founder and President Mrs. Juana Conrad by Rotary International by naming her a “Paul Harris Fellow” and then giving her a gold medal and certificate for Extraordinary Efforts in Creating Harmony and Peace Building in the World.  Mr. Topp showed genuine interest and asked many questions about the work of WIPA

This was the second time Sam Topp interviewed Jan Huang.  The first was about her living 18 years in Taiwan, her work as a radio news anchor in Taipei, and her travels to many parts of the world in her work for community development and women’s/children’s development.   That interview was in December 2002.

Mr. Topp assured Mrs. Huang that she could be a guest on his show any time she is in St. Thomas.
