Diversity + Inclusion in 2021

Dear Members,

The last several months have been productive ones for the newly formed national Diversity + Inclusion Committee, which met twice monthly with independent D+I consultant Ngozi Okeh.

Focusing on the core areas of education, membership, community outreach, and marketing, an Action Plan was developed over several meetings, and subsequently approved unanimously at our final meeting of the year.

Proposed 2021 actions from the plan include, but are not limited to:

  • Initially reviewing and reporting on educational topics/speakers/creative partners from recent years in assessing speakers that reflect the underrepresented groups. From there, an outline of proposed topics + speakers will be properly prepared for consideration.
  • Engaging in proactive recruitment such as personal invitations, new membership mixers, and speaking at meetings of targeted regional/local associations, such as CVB, Chamber of Commerce, BIPOC/LGBTQ+ affinity groups, etc.
  • Exploring mentorship opportunities with organizations and schools.
  • Expanding representation on WIPA channels by highlighting professional accomplishments, leadership, and education of diverse and historically underrepresented groups while also recognizing cultures that are celebrated each month.

Within the action plan, timelines for objectives were outlined, along with ways to measure the success of each. The hope is that this plan serves as a catalyst for the 2021 D+I committee, under the leadership of International Board member Cindy Celis.

Committee guiding principles set forth by the inaugural committee, which focus on promoting a supportive and trusting environment, will continue to be honored to ensure that all members feel welcomed and that their contributions are appreciated.

Progress takes time, and we’re confident we have a great, dedicated team of members to ensure it happens. We look forward to continuing to update you on our progress!

Cindy Celis,
2021 WIPA D+I Director
