Why Now Is the Time to Step Up in the Wedding Industry

Why Now Is the Time to Step Up in the Wedding Industry

by Ashley Allan, MBA, MSL (Phoenix Chapter)
WIPA National Director of Chapter Development

Leadership isn’t just about holding a title, it’s about making an impact, fostering growth, and building a better future for your community. In the world of weddings, where creativity meets logistics and emotions run high, strong leadership is not only important, it’s essential.

As the Wedding Industy Professionals Association (WIPA) opens its annual nominations period, we invite you to reflect on what leadership could look like for you and how stepping into a chapter or national leadership role might be the next best step in your career and your community.

The wedding industry thrives on passion, collaboration, and adaptability. Leading in this space means more than managing a team or running a business. It means:

Setting a Standard: Whether it’s championing inclusivity, promoting ethical business practices, or raising the bar on client experience, leaders shape the culture of our industry.

Being a Mentor: Leadership creates opportunities to support and guide emerging professionals, helping to build a stronger, more sustainable future for all of us.

Driving Innovation: When leaders step forward, they bring fresh ideas and new energy. They challenge the status quo and inspire others to think bigger.

If you’ve ever found yourself wanting to make a difference or wishing for change, perhaps you’re the one meant to lead it.

Leadership is not one-size-fits-all. Foundational theories such as Transformational Leadership and Servant Leadership offer valuable frameworks for how leaders can effectively guide and inspire teams, particularly in a people-centered industry like weddings. Transformational leaders focus on vision, motivation, and fostering innovation; they encourage others to exceed expectations by appealing to shared values and purpose. In contrast, Servant Leaders prioritize the needs of others first, emphasizing empathy, listening, and stewardship—qualities that align beautifully with the relational nature of wedding planning and event execution.

Additionally, Situational Leadership Theory reminds us that the best leaders are adaptable. They adjust their style based on the task at hand and the readiness of their team. This is especially relevant in the dynamic world of events, where flexibility and emotional intelligence are often just as important as technical skill. Whether you’re guiding a volunteer committee, mentoring a new professional, or representing your local market within WIPA, an understanding of these theories enhances your ability to lead with intention, clarity, and heart.

At WIPA, leadership is about collaboration, vision, and service. Our chapter and national boards are filled with industry professionals who believe in giving back, lifting others, and shaping the future of weddings through education and community.

When you serve on a WIPA board, you:

Grow Your Network: Connect with top-tier professionals in your region and beyond.

Develop Your Skills: From public speaking and event production to governance and strategic planning, leadership offers hands-on experience that translates into every facet of your business.

Elevate Your Brand: Align yourself with a respected industry organization and gain visibility as someone who takes initiative and leads with integrity.

And most importantly, you belong here. You don’t need to have decades of experience or a perfect résumé. You don’t need to be the loudest voice in the room. WIPA leaders are planners, photographers, florists, DJs, venue managers, and everything in between. What we have in common is our shared commitment to growth and excellence.

Whether you’ve been considering leadership for a while or this is the first time it’s crossed your mind, we encourage you to take this as a sign. The wedding industry needs thoughtful, engaged professionals like you to step forward.

Even if you’re unsure, go through the nominations processs, learn more about the opportunities available, and see where this step could lead you. Sometimes, all it takes is a little nudge to discover what you’re capable of.

Here’s how you can get involved:

👉 Submit your application for consideration during our open nominations period beginning September 2nd. 👈
👉 Reach out to your current chapter leadership to learn more about open roles and what’s involved. 👈
👉 Attend an upcoming event to connect with board members and ask questions. 👈

WIPA was built by passionate leaders who believed in something bigger than themselves: a supportive, forward-thinking, values-driven community. Now it’s your turn to build on that legacy.

Let’s shape the future of the wedding industry together.
