OCTOBER 2021 NEWSLETTER

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear WIPA members + friends,

I tend to quote movies when I should probably come up with original thoughts on my own.

And these days, I can’t help but think of this one scene from Monsters Inc (yes, a scholarly selection!) as I sit here with my eyes on the 2022 calendar. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, we’ve officially hit the milestone of pre-pandemic membership numbers, a remarkable feat given the year.

Recently, we welcomed WIPA Southeast FL as our newest chapter-in-formation, while also finalizing an exciting partnership with the National Gay Wedding Association. You’ll be able to catch us 10/5 with both NGWA and NSBWEP on an association leaders roundtable on IG Live.

This month, the 2022 Chapter SOPs will be voted on by our International Board after its first significant overhaul in years. We’re also in the final stages of partnering with VOW Digital Health to be able to offer interested Chapters the opportunity to utilize their app on site at chapter events.

The winds of change, indeed.

If ready to take a more active role with the exciting changes ahead, I encourage you to take time to submit yourself for consideration for the 2022 WIPA Boards (Chapter or International) by the 10/30 deadline.

I’m here anytime if you need me,

Meghan Ely, 2021 WIPA President

Message from our Diversity + Inclusion Director,
Jacqueline Vizcaino

This year we saw the birth of the newly formed chapter D&I position at WIPA. It's a solid commitment to execute the Diversity and Inclusion action plan created by a committee of diverse members with guidance from Ngozi Okeh, DEI Practitioner, in 2020. This roadmap was fundamental for guiding this new role. Simultaneously is fostering relationships and aligning with other organizations within the wedding industry, such as the National Gay Wedding Association (NGWA), National Society of Black Wedding & Event Professional (NSBWEP), and Equally Wed Pro.

Diversity and Inclusion are two important topics WIPA International is working on, along with Education, which is the essence of WIPA. Sometimes, diversity can be a dirty word because it's often associated with terms like "diversity quota" or quotas for certain groups to make them feel included; however, this isn't what we're talking about here!

Diversity refers specifically to including members from different backgrounds - whether they're genders, sexual orientations, race, color, heritage, etc.- whereas Inclusion means that you're provided equal access to WIPA resources no matter who you or your employees might be so long as there aren't any barriers preventing full participation in any activity, meeting or presentation.

As a unit, the Chapter D&I Directors have been tasked with analyzing their local membership needs. We understand that race relations and equity is not the only layer to D&I. Each member has a unique lived experience. They are looking into more detail about what it means to inclusively honor you as a member of WIPA - including addressing single-parent entrepreneurs, visible or non-visible disabilities, age discrimination, and many more inclusive topics. We will strive in 2022 to become keenly aware of the intersectionality of our membership.

D&I is a constantly evolving initiative. The needs, priorities, and desires of the community in each chapter vary greatly, which calls for tailored solutions. With that said, the committee is asking local Chapter Boards and Members to share open-door feedback as to inclusion challenges, topics, and training that would benefit you as a member via webinars, newsletters, and at your member events.

As your International Director, Jacqueline is always available along with your local Director.
